Tripiášaka meaning "Triple Basket" is the traditional term for ancient collections of Buddhist scriptures.
Tripiášaka has become Buddhist scripture synonymous used for many schools collections, although their general divisions do not match a strict division into three piášakas. The Tripiášaka is composed of three main categories of texts that collectively constitute the Buddhist canon: the Sutra Piášaka, the Vinaya Piášaka, and the Abhidhamma Piášaka. The SĹŤtra Piášaka is older than the Vinaya Piášaka, and the Abhidharma Piášaka represents a later tradition of scholastic analysis and systematization of the contents of the Sutta Piášaka originating at least two centuries after the other two parts of the canon.
The Vinaya Piášaka appears to have grown gradually as a commentary and justification of the monastic code (PrÄtimokᚣa), which presupposes a transition from a community of wandering mendicants (the SĹŤtra Piášaka period ) to a more sedentary monastic community (the Vinaya Piášaka period).
Even within the SĹŤtra Piášaka it is possible to detect older and later texts.
